Correctly chosen, window coverings keep the heat out by trapping a layer of still air between the glass surface and the covering, reducing heat flow through the glass.  The most effective internal covering are closed curtains with a pelmet. They should be made from heavy fabric with insulating backing for maximum effectiveness. They need to be long enough to reach the floor and should include a pelmet. This is important because it reduces air circulation and consequent leakage into the home. Whichever window covering is used, it is advised to shade windows from sunrise to sunset, keeping the sun out of the house for as long as possible.
