Are you sleeping with MITES?
Most of us are
blissfully unaware that each night, as we drift off to sleep, hundreds
of thousand of dust mites, bacteria and fungus are comfortably living in
their own self-sustaining eco-systems within the very pillows and
mattresses on which we sleep so soundly.
Did
you know…..
-
House dust mites
are microscopic bugs that live on dead skin cells regularly shed
from humans and their pets.
-
While harmless
to most people they can trigger an allergic reaction in people with
asthma and allergy who react to their droppings.
-
Up to 20% of the weight of the average 2-year old pillow may be dead skin,
bacteria and dust mites and their excrement.
-
Dust mites are a trigger factor of symptoms in 50-80% of people with
asthma.
-
A single dust
mite produces 20 waste droppings each day, therefore, 100,000 mites
produce two million droppings per day.
-
Studies have
shown the average 2-year old pillow contains a substantial fungal
load, with four to six different species identified
per pillow sample, with thousands of spores of fungus per
gram of pillow – more than is usually found on the average used toothbrush.
To Improve your
pillow and bedding hygiene…..
-
Regularly
washing bedding above 55º Celsius kills dust mites and their droppings.
-
Pillow and
mattress protectors can also help reduce the occurrence and are
removable for ease of washing.
-
Exposing pillows
and bedding to natural sunlight on a daily or weekly basis has been
shown to reduce the presence of dust mites.
-
If you see signs of aging
such as a noticeable change in weight or distinct colour change,
it’s time to invest in a new pillow or quilt.
Ex
Boltons has an extensive range of pillows, pillow
protectors and mattress protectors,
including some specially designed for people with
allergies.
